UK Age Verification Law For Adult Producers
The Online Safety Act changed what running an adult content business in the UK requires. Here is the producer-side view: performer checks, viewer age assurance, and the records that prove both. Practical guidance, not legal advice.
What age verification does a UK adult producer need?
Two separate things. Production side: every performer must be verified 18 or over with government photo ID before filming, with copies kept on record. Distribution side: under the Online Safety Act, any service showing pornographic content to UK users needs highly effective viewer age assurance, enforced by Ofcom. Platforms handle their own viewer checks; your own sites are your responsibility.
The two duties, kept separate
Producers hear "age verification" and think of performer ID checks, which have always been non-negotiable. The Online Safety Act added a second, distinct duty aimed at viewers: services with UK users that publish pornographic content must stop under-18s reaching it, using measures Ofcom considers highly effective. Conflating the two is the most common compliance mistake we see; passing one duty does nothing for the other.
Production side: performers
Sight real ID before filming, keep legible copies, and file them with the signed release and production date so any published scene traces back to its full record set. Distribution side: viewers
Selling through major platforms leaves viewer age assurance with the platform. Running anything of your own that shows explicit material to UK visitors, a paysite, a clip store, even a free preview page, can bring that service under the Act. Age assurance vendors offer estimation and verification tools; what matters to Ofcom is effectiveness, not which vendor you pick.

What does the Online Safety Act require from adult sites?
Services that publish or host pornographic content and have UK users must use highly effective age assurance to keep under-18s off that content. Self-declaration tick boxes do not qualify. Ofcom is the regulator and can fine non-compliant services, so if you operate your own paysite or clip store with UK traffic, viewer age assurance is now part of running the business.
Is verifying my performers enough to satisfy the OSA?
No. Performer age verification and viewer age assurance are separate duties. Verifying that everyone you film is 18 or over is a production-side obligation you carry at every shoot. The Online Safety Act adds a distribution-side duty: checking the age of the people viewing the content on your service. A compliant operation needs both.
How do I verify performer age properly?
Before anything is filmed: sight a current government-issued photo ID in person, take and keep a legible copy, and record the performer’s legal name, stage names and date of birth alongside the production date and signed release. Casting through a directory where every listed performer is already ID-checked gives you a verified starting point, but you still take your own copies on the day.
Does the OSA apply if my content only sells through big platforms?
If you distribute exclusively through established platforms, the platform carries the viewer-side age assurance duty for its own service. Your production-side duties, performer age verification and record-keeping, are unchanged. The moment you run your own site, preview gallery or link-in-bio page that shows pornographic content to UK visitors, viewer age assurance duties can attach to that service too.
What records prove I did this properly?
Keep performer ID copies, signed releases and production dates filed per shoot, plus a record of the age assurance measures your own services use. Under UK GDPR, performer ID documents are personal data: store them securely, restrict who can access them, and hold them only for compliance purposes.
